Chemical peel

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that uses a chemical solution to remove the outer layers of the skin, revealing smoother, brighter, and more even-toned skin underneath. Chemical peels are typically performed on the face, but can also be done on the neck, chest, and hands. Here’s what you can expect from a chemical peel:

  1. Preparation: Before the treatment, your skin will be cleansed and prepped to remove any oils or debris that could interfere with the effectiveness of the peel. You may be asked to stop certain products few days before the peel.
  2. Application: The chemical solution will be applied to the skin using a brush or applicator. The solution may cause a slight burning or tingling sensation, but this is usually temporary.
  3. Duration: The duration of the treatment will depend on the strength of the chemical peel and the desired results. Some peels can be done in as little as 10 minutes, while others may take up to 8 to 10 hours (yellow peel).
  4. Neutralization: After the chemical solution has been applied, it will be neutralized with a special solution or water to stop the chemical reaction and prevent overexfoliation.
  5. Recovery: After the treatment, your skin may be red and sensitive, and may peel or flake for several days to a week. It’s important to avoid sun exposure and to keep the skin hydrated with gentle moisturizers.

There are several different types of chemical peels, ranging from mild to deep, depending on the strength and concentration of the chemical solution used. Mild peels are typically done with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) and are used to exfoliate the surface layers of the skin. Medium and deep peels are done with stronger chemicals, such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and can penetrate deeper into the skin to treat more advanced signs of aging or skin damage.

Chemical peels can be an effective treatment for a range of skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne, and hyperpigmentation. However, they may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with sensitive or reactive skin. It’s always a good idea to consult with a licensed medical professional to determine if a chemical peel is right for you and to discuss the specific details of the treatment process.
